Issues that Broadway Mortuary and other Summit attendees discussed with their elected officials were: Ensuring that taxpayers who set aside money for their funeral and burial trusts are not penalized for planning ahead by having this money counted as an asset in determining eligibility for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program; easing the tax burden for family-owned funeral homes through reduction or elimination of the federal estate tax; and increasing affordable healthcare options for small businesses.
The majority of NFDA-member funeral homes are small, family-owned businesses that have strong ties to their community and are dedicated to giving back through various outreach programs.
“It’s important our voices be heard so we can move the key issues that affect our business and those we serve forward with our senators and representatives,” said Ashley Cozine. “We have a strong commitment to the families and community we serve. The success of our business helps us maintain our programs and services that are beneficial to the public.”
