Cole Christopher BankusJune 18, 2009 ~ November 26, 2017 (age 8)
Cole was born on June 18th, 2009 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was a joyful and very happy baby boy, full of energy who loved to smile, a little smile that would melt hearts. He was a normal, healthy baby just beginning to enjoy life.
At age 15 months, Cole was diagnosed with tranverse myelitis, a neurological disorder that infected him as a result of one of his childhood vaccinations. Tranverse myelitis causes the spinal cord to become inflamed, which in turn leads to problems with the central nervous system. As a result of this disorder, little Cole was left a quadriplegic.
Although he was left unable to speak or use his arms or legs due to this debilitating condition, Cole fought a brave battle as he continued to grow. Confined to a wheelchair, Cole continued to smile, laugh and bring joy to those around him. He loved watching cartoons and animated movies, and developed his own little unique laugh.
Cole was unable to breathe on his own, and required around the clock medical supervision. His prognosis was never good, as doctors advised this condition was permanent, and that he would likely only live to be 20. Eventually, Cole was able to come home and have care provided with the aid of medical devices, and was cared for by his mother Kimberly. He enjoyed his short life to the fullest, never really knowing that this condition was abnormal.
Cole developed pneumonia and passed away last night due to complications arising from his medical condition. His mom Kimberly and grandmother Janet are devastated by grief, and I am creating this fund in hopes of bringing Cole back home to Colorado where we wish to have his memorial services held. Cole was not able to be insured because of his condition, and his mother Kimberly did not work as she stayed at home with him to provide care.
All donations will go to a special fund to be used to bring Cole and his mother home to Colorado, and to help assist with the expenses for his memorial service. I will update everyone as soon as those plans are arranged.
Cole Christopher Bankus was granted his angel wings on November 26, 2017 and the age of 8. His final hours were in his mother's loving arms. Cole's life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. His cheery smile and laughter brought so much joy and happiness to our family. Although he was so tiny and frail, he gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us of the preciousness of life. He loved to watch cartoons and animated movies, and developed his own little unique laugh. He could spend hours watching his favorite cartoon while cuddling close to those he loved so much. Cole is survived by his loving mother, Kimberley Bankus; sister Acaica Alcaraz; brother Anthony Alcaraz paternal grandparents Janet Machado and Billy Bankus; uncle Zachary Bankus; aunt Tiffany Bankus and many other family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Cole Bankus Memorial Fund at gofundme.com or Janet Machado, 5488 Stetson Meadows Dr Colorado Springs, CO 80922.
