Raleigh Carl “R.C.” Schreck, 81, passed away on December 23, 2017, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born on June 28, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas to Raleigh Walter and Loris (Beardslee) Schreck. He attended grade school in Colorado for a few years before returning to Wichita where he attended Central Junior High School and then Wichita North High School. While at North, R. C. was an athlete, playing football, basketball and running track and field. He was involved in many school activities and was a member of the National Thespian Society, appearing in a number of school plays and musicals. He graduated from North in 1954.
During his senior year he met Mary Jane Tweedy. They were married on February 5, 1955, and that union would last 56 years. They had two sons, Blake and Kirk, and enjoyed a long and loving marriage and family life.
R.C. worked as a steamfitter for over 40 years, helping build many prominent buildings in the area. He was an active member of the plumbers and pipefitters union for 55 years.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish with family and friends, especially the many years spent with Mary Jane on Table Rock Lake.
R.C. and Mary Jane were active members of the congregation at Bethany Lutheran church for over 50 years, where he sang, loudly and happily, in the choir.
He was preceded in death by wife Mary Jane, and is survived by son Blake (Karen), Kirk (Gina), and grandchildren Taylor (Grant ) Stauffer, Bailey Schreck,
Jacob (Rebeccah) Schreck, Danny Varela, and six great grandchildren.
R.C. was always known for his big laugh, big heart, and his love for family and friends. He was a supportive, devoted, and loving husband and father. He will be dearly remembered and sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 30 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1000 W. 26th street S. in Wichita. The family will greet friends at a reception following the service.
